Aunque todavía hay alguna huella de 'Beautiful Loser', 'Against The Wind' encuentra a Bob Seger volviéndo hacia lo artesanal. Tenía que hacerlo, ya que 'Against The Wind' llegó después de tres álbumes de gran éxito y giras interminables. Aún así, este registro no da la sensación de inmediato o sentimental, como alguno de sus predecesores, algo patente desde su inicio con el rockero 'The Horizontal Bop', posiblemente su canción más descuidada. Es divertido, el disco empieza a patear a toda marcha con 'You'll Accomp'ny Me', una gran balada. Las baladas predominan, con temas introspectivos como 'Against the Wind' y 'Fire Lake'.
