'Up' es el primer álbum de REM sin el bateria Bill Berry y el primero que repudia el legado del jangle pop. 'Up' está dominado por teclados, percusión apagada, guitarras enterradas y melodías malhumoradas. Solo 'Daysleeper' muestra al grupo en un territorio sónico familiar. REM intenta ser moderno y muestra un sonido más elástico. Se abre con la siniestra 'Airportman' y la seductora 'Suspicion'. El resto son canciones malhumoradas de tempo lento que no logran impresionar porque no arriesgan lo suficiente. Son simplemente pistas bien elaboradas, pero difíciles de amar.
